Inspiration, Everywhere

My so-called Creativity Fountain has been tapped of its resources – I’ve been really scatterbrained and unfocused when I sit with Sina (my PC) to work on my writing – but ever since I read Sherman Alexie’s The Lone Ranger & Tonto Fistfight in Heaven on my retreat, the fountain’s been ejaculating ideas aplenty that can only be described as Out Of The Ballpark. It was a game-changer – nay, ’twas the game-changer. So my foray into fiction (*screams out loud*) has begun. I’m sure shedding tears is just a natural part of the process, like this accompanying abject fear and projectile-vomiting.

I am so inspired by/envious of the preposterous talents and blog of Christoph Niemann. I’m also really enjoying The Small Object Steno Pad – inviting blog, enchanting shop – and the webcomic, Married to the Sea. Inspiration strikes everywhere, so I’m in the process of cleaning the bejeezus out of our apartment – 1) to have a better space in which to write, and 2) in case we need to quickly leave the country. This foray into organization is helped, in part, by Allison over at Simplify Organization; she got me started, I just need to finish.

I’m taking the old adage that ‘good writers read a lot’ to heart, which has resulted in ruined eyesight with excessive late-night reading. Want a good read? Chew on these essays by David Sedaris, Sherman Alexie, and Stephen Colbert. I love these men, I hate these men. I wish I could find female writers that really appeal to me, like if Diablo Cody wrote a book, I’d be all over it. Guess I’ll have to do some research.

Movies that have prodded the fountain: District 9, The Hurt Locker, The Aristocrats, and Kung Fu Hustle. Books that have recently set my brain on fire: Prep, The Girls’ Guide to Hunting & Fishing, the aforementioned Sherman Alexie book, and Three Cups of Tea.

I’m having a love affair with this color green, and I’ve had multiple dreams where I paint my kitchen that color. It’s cheerful, without being Urination Yellow, which is what our kitchen is now. I’ve also enjoyed staring at this red door, and drooling over Smitten Kitchen’s clementine cake. Serious yum.

The best inspiration is me being able to walk. I can’t go far, but I’m upright and mobile; progress, not perfection.
